The Changing Seasons, August 2023

Reflecting on the month past

We enjoyed our first post-pandemic jaunt out of Singapore to visit Ipoh. We also took a few delightful days to reacquaint ourselves with Kuala Lumpur.

From left: 1) exploring KL’s Civic District, 2) Ilham Gallery, one of our favourite art venues with their resident sculpture Pose Freman Kampung, Yunizar (2014), 3) run at KLCC with the iconic Twin Towers

Left: Younger Child & Loving Husband delight in coffee poured from claypot medine jars & kaya toast at Pik Wah Bar & Cafe, Jalan Petaling; Right: mural art in a restored enclave of 鬼仔巷 Kwai Chai Hong (Little Ghost Lane)

We entertained the last of our summer visitors at our favourite eateries: Bamboo Bowls (left “Saigon”) and Samy’s Curry (right)

We introduced our dear friends visiting from Oxford, UK, to the green-forward Bamboo Bowls as one of the party (and myself) is vegetarian. I had Saigon on that day: rice vermicelli, lemongrass tofu & crunchy pickled vegetables.

We chose Samy’s Curry as the venue for our meal with family friends who also happen to live in Oxford. This restaurant is nostalgic for them as they ate here when they were growing up. Also, the food is good.

From our kitchen

From top left, clockwise: 1) experimental cake with fruit from our Ugly Fruit Grocer, 2) blueberry muffin with ugly fruit, 3) wrap with more goodies from our Ugly Fruit Grocer (avocado, tomatoes, mushrooms, greens), 4) Coffee Einspanner (because Younger Child saw it in NYT Cooking), 5) experimental cake with jackfruit from a friend’s tree, 6) apple-apricot cake, 7) Victoria Sponge to celebrate Singapore’s National Day

About The Changing Seasons

The Changing Seasons is a monthly project where bloggers around the world share their thoughts and feelings about the month just gone. We all approach this slightly differently, though generally with an emphasis on the photos we’ve taken during the month.

For many of us, looking back over these photos provides the structure and narrative of our post, so each month is different. Some focus on documenting the changes in a particular project — such as a garden, an art or craft project, or a photographic diary of a familiar landscape.

But in the end, it is your changing season, and you should approach it however works for you.

There are no fixed rules around post length or photo number — just a request that you respect your readers’ time and engagement.

  1. The strawberry cake looks good! I am actually planning Lana’s birthday for next month and I asked Lana what she wanted. She said she wanted a pink cake with strawberries on top and candles too. Sounds like a plan!

    1. It is very precious to share a meal & conversation – I don’t enjoy large parties, so intimate meals is the way I enjoy connecting with family & friends.

So happy to share your month at The Changing Seasons, Pauline. Even your “not so busy” month looks action-packed and colourful!

    1. It does feel like the pace has definitely picked up since coming out of our pandemic cocoons; I do try to take time to breathe deeply, bake fun things and bask in bits of loveliness.

So happy to have you pop in for a visit, Tracy.

  2. Julyn I love the photo of your superhero pose. It’s so nice that you run in even your holidays. I should do this. Medicine jar, interesting. And was that a strawberry shortcake that you made? Also I finally get to vote (tomorrow) but I’ve never been to Samy’s curry in my over 2 decades here. Hmm maybe tomorrow night at Dempsey to celebrate our first polling experience. 🙂

    1. Thank you for delighting in our photo memories with me – so happy to see you in this space!

It was Younger Child’s 1st polling experience too! and we went to Sinpopo at Tangs for tea to celebrate with her … Hope it was as exciting an experience for you as it was for her!

It is a funny pose, isn’t it? It is one of our favourite sculptures & sculptors.

It was a dressed up Victoria Sponge – one of Loving Husband’s favourite cakes.
