The Changing Seasons, June 2022

Reflecting on the month past

After a month filled with visits from overseas friends & family, gleeful rain (and sunny day) runs, lots of baking & good food, we end the month with The Covid. Older Child was down last week. Yesterday, Loving Husband tested positive. All this despite us being so very careful.

Fortunately, Older Child emerged relatively unscathed (apart from a high fever on one day, the rest of the sick period was mundane). So far, Loving Husband has a scratchy throat & cough – hopefully it won’t get too much worse.

Younger Child & I have escaped to my folks’s apartment – they are away in Penang, Malaysia so we have the run of the place without fear of bringing any germs to them.

Here are some of my favourite moments from the month:

From top left (clockwise): 1) remembered to put freshly sliced bananas on the top of our banana bread, 2) Phoebe is a stray with a house, 3) iLight Singapore 2022, 4) tomato soup & garlic bread from my favourite sandwich shop Rebel Gurl, plate by Talented Potter Friend, coaster tatted by nimble-fingered Older Child, 5)milk (homemade cashew-oat) & cookies (made by Older Child, along with the tatted coaster), 6) ran to the Marina Bay Cruise Centre, 7) time with my little brother & little sister, 8) sesame ball & sweet potato filled with lava salted egg from Swee Choon, one of our favourite dim sum places

This next set (including the feature photo) was taken on visit to Yishun Dam; it was stepping back in time to 1970s Singapore.

About The Changing Seasons

The Changing Seasons is a monthly project where bloggers around the world share their thoughts and feelings about the month just gone. We all approach this slightly differently, though generally with an emphasis on the photos we’ve taken during the month.

For many of us, looking back over these photos provides the structure and narrative of our post, so each month is different. Some focus on documenting the changes in a particular project — such as a garden, an art or craft project, or a photographic diary of a familiar landscape.

But in the end, it is your changing season, and you should approach it however works for you.

There are no fixed rules around post length or photo number — just a request that you respect your readers’ time and engagement.

  1. I’m sorry your family got sick. My husband got COVID pneumonia and he’s currently out-of-state at the moment. It’s leaving him limbo since he can’t go back home. Here’s to hoping to a swift recovery!

    1. Hope your husband is recovered and safely home. It affects us in such unexpected ways – from inconvenience to life-threatening … and one never knows which it will be. Hope you are all keeping well.

    1. Thank you for your well-wishes Bren! It seems like everyone around us is recovering or just caught The Covid. And some are plagued with symptoms a long time after – hope your son fully recovers soon.

So happy to have you join us at The Changing Seasons!

  2. Sorry to hear some of your family have been ill with Covid, it’s really not pleasant. Love your photos especially the one of the two of you at Marina Bay and the very last fisherman one

  3. So sorry about the Covid! I hope you and Daughter manage to avoid it, and I’m glad the other two don’t have it too badly! How fortunate to have a place to stay away from home rather than everyone having to stay in their room for two weeks. That was me. :/

    1. I think many of us will get to wait out the illness at home (if we are fortunate) – it’s just the inconvenience of having to rejig the household in the attempt to keep the rest as well as possible.

    1. Hope you & Jack stay safe & well, Pauline!
We are all recovering now (yes, unfortunately the whole household eventually caught it) and are very grateful that the symptoms were all managed with medication. It is taking longer than the usual flu to get over though – we’ve been told to be patient and take the time to rest.

Thank you for checking in to The Changing Seasons despite your busyness with the move – always so glad to hear from you.

        1. We are much recovered although there are still lingering symptoms (we’ve heard this is pretty common amongst C-sufferers). We are grateful that we are able to get on with most things and are just taking it easy day by day.

  4. I’m relieved that Older Child battled her virus quickly; hoping the same for Loving Husband. The photo of you and Younger Child at your parents’ place is charming. Is she baking for you???

I enjoyed looking at the playful, yummy and happy photos from the last season. The sesame ball looks amazing. I hope everyone recovers soon; I wish you all a happy reunion soon!

    1. Thank you for the good thoughts for our recovery & reunion. I’ve been kinda out of it and have taken this long to get back to reading & writing in this space. I consider myself very fortunate to have experienced Covid-Lite, but still, the brain fog that came with it was something else (although it could have just been my menopausal self, I’m not sure).

      1. Hi, Ju-Lyn. What a busy month you had in more ways than one. It must have been so nice to see your family. Wishing your husband and daughter a speedy recovery. You take care too. This virus is so random.
I did send my pingback through. It might be in your spam folder.
        Best wishes.

  6. No matter how careful, we all do seem to succumb at some point or other. How many of us have never had flu? Not pleasant, but a fact of life these days. On the other hand, isn’t it wonderful that our world is opening up and we can see family and friends again? Wishing you all a healthy, happy July, Ju-Lyn.

    1. Exactly! It’s just going to be part of life now, isn’t it? So it’s about balancing what we want/need to do with being as careful as we can. Keep safe & well, Jo!

  7. Lovely pictures and lovely food, but I’m so sorry your family got sick. We’ve been lucky so far, but that’s probably because we live in such an underpopulated area and we are almost never near anyone who doesn’t live here. Take your time recovering. Rest and be well.
