The Changing Seasons: September 2021

How was your September?

Brian at BushboyBlog and I are co-hosting this challenge to share our month past. We hope you will join in with your own The Changing Seasons post. For those of you who are new to this space, details are at the bottom of this post.

I was never a big Birthday Celebrator as a young adult. But when the children came along, it became important to celebrate their annual milestones. Birth Days became Birth Weeks, and then when Festive Younger Daughter decided a decade ago that she had to have 11 parties to celebrate each year of her life, Birth Months became a thing.

And so through September, we celebrated my birthday. And what a month it’s been – it turns out that many BlogFriends as well as friends in Singapore also celebrated. There was a lot of cheer on my virtual spaces.

This cake (shown in its glorious entirety in the Feature Photo) was baked by my Buttercream Queen Friend who decided to gift it some time after the frenzied cake eating time around the actual birthdate. I am loved.

In the kitchen, we made Apple treats for Julie at Eat, Play, Live‘s Apples Around the World. Julie inspires with apples in salad & an awesome apple cake,

What apple treats have you had this month?

About The Changing Seasons

The Changing Seasons is a monthly project where bloggers around the world share their thoughts and feelings about the month just gone. We all approach this slightly differently — though generally with an emphasis on the photos we’ve taken during the month.

For many of us, looking back over these photos provides the structure and narrative of our post, so each month is different. Some focus on documenting the changes in a particular project — such as a garden, an art or craft project, or a photographic diary of a familiar landscape.

But in the end, it is your changing season, and you should approach it however works for you.

There are no fixed rules around post length or photo number — just a request that you respect your readers’ time and engagement.

  1. I do love any kind of crumble, but I had a wonderful cinnamon flavoured apple pie sometime last month. Sorry, Ju-Lyn, I’ve lost touch a bit since I hopped over to the new blog.

    1. Ah! You have a new blog – I followed your link but it takes me back to your old blog which says you were off on a plane. Could you send me the link to your new blog?

  2. Happy belated birthday Ju-Lyn. That cake looks like a work of art, I’m sure it was delicious too.
My son and my husband both celebrate in September too – 4th and 5th!

    1. I would so love to have you over for a feast, Tracy!
That cake really is a work of art and a labour of love. Baker Younger Child and I have tried this style of frosting and our fingers were numb before we could cover half of a cake this size!

    1. Hee hee! You are so sweet to say so, Marilyn! I grew up in a household where plating is so very important and my mother believed we eat with our eyes first. I have to admit not everything look and tastes good all the time, but I gratefully accept the compliment.

    1. Thank you for the birthday well-wishes Annika! The cake was divine … and we enjoyed sharing it with neighbours and loved ones … too much joy (and sugar) to keep for oneself!

  3. Perfect day! We actually got out there to take some pictures AND it didn’t rain for at least six hours. We haven’t had any apple anything because they didn’t have the apples I like at the market. I think we’ll have to go to the stands at the orchards to get what we want.

I think the leaves are going to change tonight when the temperature drops. I could have sworn they were changing as we looked at them this afternoon!

    1. Thanks for enjoying the goodies with me, Laurie. We are particularly proud of our apple cake – the recipe (from KingArthurFlour) called for boiled cider and we made do by boiling down apple juice. It was soooooo intensely apple!
