The Changing Seasons: August 2021

How has your August been?

Brian at BushboyBlog and I are co-hosting this challenge to share our month past. We hope you will join in with your own The Changing Seasons post. For those of you who are new to this space, details are at the bottom of this post.

The seasonal food that has appeared in Singapore is the Moon Cake, hence, the mooncake emoji’s I have used as a divider: 🥮

Almost as important as the mooncakes themselves are the ornate gift boxes they come in.

The mooncake is one of the quintessential Mid-Autumn Festival icons. Leading up to Sep 21, many Singaporeans have already started making, gifting & indulging in these traditional cakes. Originating in China, these were made with lotus or redbean paste, with the option for various fillings. Modern takes include cakes which are filled with custard, ice creams, chocolate, and even Oreos.

Younger Daughter and I will save a mooncake, or perhaps two if our self-control allows, to savour on the actual night of celebration: to nibble while sipping tea, admiring the moon and reciting poetry. We might even carry a lantern as we stroll through the gardens.

A highlight this month is my interview with CatholicSg Radio. Kenny Ngo, a talented musician, is my lively host. I knew Kenny first as an accompanist extraordinaire, and my piano instructor for a spell. And this month, had the privilege of having a conversation with him about my ICU pneumonia experience 4 years ago.

In the kitchen, it was a month filled with tomatoes. I have envied those of you who have picked & eaten this fruit off the vine. I tried my best with the produce I could get at the store. Inspired by many of your posts, as well as Julie’s Eat Around The World Challenge, and responses to my question, here are some of the goodies I put together:

Several BlogFriends suggested I roast Cherry Tomatoes with Feta to mix in with pasta – I had the pasta in my larder, I ordered the feta … I ran out of tomatoes! I usually keep tomatoes in my fridge as a staple, but oddly, when the feta came in, I never had enough tomatoes to make the pasta. It is forthcoming.

About The Changing Seasons

The Changing Seasons is a monthly project where bloggers around the world share their thoughts and feelings about the month just gone. We all approach this slightly differently — though generally with an emphasis on the photos we’ve taken during the month.

For many of us, looking back over these photos provides the structure and narrative of our post, so each month is different. Some focus on documenting the changes in a particular project — such as a garden, an art or craft project, or a photographic diary of a familiar landscape.

But in the end, it is your changing season, and you should approach it however works for you.

There are no fixed rules around post length or photo number — just a request that you respect your readers’ time and engagement.

  1. Those mooncakes look wonderful. I’m not so fond of the lotus filling. The red bean paste I find more interesting. I had no idea though that my favourite eggy mooncake was traditional. Too bad it is not easy to source them here. Apart from that, you seem to have had a very tomatoey August!

  2. The food looks oh so good, and naturally the swirly pizza caught my eye. Really enjoyed hearing your voice. Believe it or not, your voice sounded exactly the way I imagined it to sound. Doesn’t always work that way.

    1. Thanks for taking the time to listen to the podcast, Laurie. And you’re right, we don’t all sound the way we look!!!

I was so taken by the pizza when I first saw your post … it’s a keeper in our household!

  3. I love the thought of mooncakes, as well as their look, their tradition and their history…unfortunately I never acquired a taste for them. Now your pizza on the other hand, just the photo alone had my mouth watering! 😀

    1. I like some versions of mooncakes better than others. I’m really in it for the salted egg yolk …

I do love pizza, so I am glad this one tickled your fancy!

  4. Ah yes, mooncake season once more! Those are pretty delicious treats, albeit rather expensive here in the Philippines.

Am a fan of the mixed nuts mooncake with an egg yolk inside!

    1. I’m afraid they are expensive here, too. So we are fortunate to be gifted with sufficient from our friends. And of course, the children love the gift boxes they come in!

Ah! you are a fan of mixed nuts & egg yolk. I am actually only interested in the egg yolk – so any flavour as long as the yolk is there!!!

  6. What a tomato-ie month you had, Ju-Lynn. Your baking is always such an artistic feast for the eyes. You’ve given me the idea to go out to buy a moon cake. I think our Asian grocery stores might be doing it tough because many of our international students haven’t been able to return to Australia.
I will watch your interview as soon as I can. No wonder you are so diligant about wearing your mask when you are on your runs. Pneumonia leaves its mark and you wouldn’t want to end up in ICU again with a viral infection.
Take care and good baking in September.

    1. Appreciate so much your sharing my month with me. The tomato theme was rather fun – and very delicious! There are still recipes I want to try …

It’s so nice of you to support the Asian grocery stores. I can imagine all the businesses who rely on tourists and overseas students would really be hurting.

Very grateful that I have the option of running with a mask. And that I have quiet roads and trails to use.

Wishing you a good month ahead, Tracy, with lots of fresh air, toe-tapping tunes and beautiful birds!

    1. Hee hee! I’ve stashed away 2 little ones at the far reaches of my fridge. Out of sight out of mind – we have some weeks to go before our tea-sipping/moon-admiring/poetry-reciting occasion.
