Our Favourite Hawker Noodle

Happy Place, Happy Space, Last Photo for June 2021

Hawker Culture in Singapore is an integral part of the way of life for Singaporeans, where people from all walks of life gather at hawker centres to dine and bond over their favourite hawker food … this unique combination of food, space and community has evolved into a microcosm of Singapore’s multicultural society, with stalls selling Chinese, Malay, Indian and many other diverse types of dishes.

Our SG Heritage

Since the pandemic last year, the hawkers in Singapore have been very hard hit. We try to support when we can by patronising our favourite hawker stalls across the island. We are coming out of a Heightened Alert and we’ve noticed many of the hawker centres we’ve visited these past couple of weeks have been very quiet. Many stalls are closed and with the restriction of 2 to a group of diners, the atmosphere is rather subdued.

On June 30, we visited Alexandra Village Food Centre to takeaway from our favourite noodle shop.

The couple who run the stall were thrilled to see Loving Husband, recognising him immediately despite the face mask, and reeled off our preferred orders without him asking.

Loving Husband queuing up at Lian Kee Bak Chor Mee, Alexander Food Centre

Bak Chor Mee translates to minced meat noodles. It is characterised by noodles tossed in vinegar, with some combination of minced meat, pork slices, pork liver, stewed sliced mushrooms, fish cake slices, fish balls and meat balls. You can choose to have it with, or without, chilli.

From top, clockwise: kuey teow (flat rice noodles) with fish cake slices & stewed mushroom (for me), mee pok (flat egg noodles) topped with everything but the kitchen sink (Loving Husband’s), standard bowl with mee kia (thin egg noodles; Younger Daughter’s)

  1. Here on a random raid, Ju-Lyn and all links check out fine with the exception of the heightened alert which I assume now is defunct as it gives a 404 error. Hope you are well.

  2. Reading this and seeing the yummy looking photos make me miss the hawker centers! I visit different hawker centers everytime I go to Singapore and I always find a good bowl of prawn noodle soup.

        1. We try to do what we can – we tried to keep the one-use plastic containers to reuse in the beginning but they were piling up in an alarming manner, so we decided that we’d better do better.

    1. So you know exactly what I’m talking about, Donna. It’s one of those things that is quite difficult to describe, and much better experienced.

Looking forward to deliciousness in a few days!
