Church of St Ignatius

The Suscipe Prayer

My home parish is a Jesuit church; St Ignatius has a special place in our prayers and music. The Suscipe (Latin for Receive) prayer is beloved.

Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty,
my memory, my understanding,
and my entire will,
All I have and call my own.

You have given all to me.
To you, Lord, I return it.

Everything is yours; do with it what you will.
Give me only your love and your grace,
that is enough for me.

St Ignatius of Loyola, 1491-1556

We sang the following Dan Schutte setting to the prayer a lot when we were still singing in the choir. It occurs to me that these are pertinent lyrics for the Lenten season.

Notes:

  • The first word of the prayer in Latin gives its name; the first line reads: Suscipe, Domine, universam meam libertatem.
  • We ran to church on 13 Feb 2021 as part of our SG Camino.

    1. Many of our Catholic churches have undergone major renovations in the past couple of decades, and therefore, look very modern. I am of two minds about this (as you might have guessed I would be).
